Reading Rainbow

I heart books for many reasons: a lingering affection carried over from my after-school job in a library, my mom’s current position at a different library, my big sister’s career in publishing and - of course - the overall wordy goodness we all know and love whether or not books are a family business.

Here’s a new reason to add to my list: they look damn good on a shelf ESPECIALLY when they’re displayed as meticulously as this:

Thanks to my friend Quan for directing our attention to this masterpiece on freshome. Now I’ve just gotta figure out which of our rooms could handle a “library” wall and then dig up a few hundred dollars to blow at Barnes & Noble.

Oh, that’s funny, you guys. I did a post about organizing books by color on Hooked on Houses a while back–using different photos than this one–and it stirred up all sorts of controversy. Some people loved it and others HATED it (and let me know about it!).

You should stop by and see the photos of bookshelves I posted if you’re interested, and read the arguments for and against it that my readers had. The whole idea originated with an artist’s installment in an independent bookstore and I have pics of it, as well:

Isn’t that gorgeous! I have been tempted to arrange my books by color like that, but am too lazy. Plus, I do mine by subject, maybe I am a bit anal that way. :) Looks so pretty though!

Like Aimee, I don’t think I’ll partake in this one though. After further thought I realized (1) I don’t own enough books and (2) it goes completely against my OCD tendencies to organize by subject. You are talking to a guy who once practically had the dewey decimal system memorized for his old job reshelving books. That installation in the bookstore almost makes me cringe! The poor shoppers!
