Burning Question: Theme Scheme?
Ok, if all of a sudden, out of the blue, theme rooms were to come back into style (just go with us here) and the themier the room, the better… what theme would you go with? I mentioned “some Tahiti inspired spa theme” while John looked me in the eye and deadpanned “Garfield”. We just might crown a winner, here- so go crazy.

I asked Eric about this, and about 0.00001 seconds later he said “Star Wars”.
For me, surfers beach hut. Yes, even with the beach towels on the floor and the mess.
My boyfriend also said Star Wars. {gag} Personally I would have to say…an African theme, complete with conga drums, bright fabrics with plenty of pattern, and a hut where I sleep (I’m going with the bedroom as the room choice). We also can’t forget the mosquito nets…avoiding contracting malaria from the skeeters is always essential.
You guys’ blog is so wonderful. I find myself checking in everyday. When there isn’t something new to read, I am digging through the archives reading every single post. I find so much inspiration on this site. My husband and I are just starting construction on our new house, and I can’t wait to move in and decorate. I love your style and I know I will be imitating a lot of it in my own home. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work. If you’d like to see how our house is coming along, I try to update with photos every couple of days or so. My blog address is http://etxwife.wordpress.com

My neighbors, who shall remain nameless, have a “Pittsburgh Steelers” room. Yellow above the chair rail, black (no, really: BLACK) below, with all the Steelers-related stuff you can imagine. The husband (let’s call him ‘Michael’) is going to try to convince their baby son that he wants to move into that room, so that mommy (let’s call her ‘Erica’) won’t make him re-paint it when the baby gets a baby sibling one of these years…
And I confess I actually know more than one person with a “Disney” room.
We have several “theme” rooms: messy kitchen, muddy mud-room, clothes-strewn teen-ager bedroom…
Does a “dog room” count as a themed room? We have a room that is all dog crates and dog supplies (plus a treadmill that the dogs do run on). My mom calls it the “nursery”…
I’d probably have to blind myself before I’d agree to living in a room plastered with Disney characters. I don’t care if it’s “the happiest place on earth”. Let it ALL stay at Disneyland/World. Theme rooms. Gag. A while back, my husband actually asked that we NEVER watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition aagain, because he got so tired of hearing my complaints: “No no no! Not another theme room! Tsk, tsk, Ty Pennington … that’s such a waste!” If I HAD TO choose something, I’d probably go with some sort of outdoors-y theme …. like a treehouse or forest dwelling, but I doubt I would be able to stomache it for very long.
My aunt has a breakfast themed kitchen. Fruit Loop wallpaper, the handles on the cabinets are strips of bacon, the tiles are made to look like pieces of toast. I remember when she started this project she “borrowed” menus from Denny’s to get ideas. This began over ten years ago and today it has amassed into a display of “break-chic”. The bagel clock was a nice touch on my part, even when as times I think the muffin lamp is a BIT much!
Diner! I’ve been collecting diner plates for years. I’d love to have one of those revolving things that the desserts are displayed in, it would make a great fridge.
There is nothing, I repeat, nothing , good about a theme room..any theme.
Unless you are still wearing pullups…. there is no excuse.
I accidentally watched this episode and I have had nightmares for weeks! My eyes! Please, it hurts! Take this down!
As much as we appreciate good design, I have to admit it’s been pretty fun to swing over to the bad taste side for a while. Thanks for all your weird and dorky ideas everyone (Star Wars seems to be popular). We should do this more often…or maybe not :)

^^I was going to say the same! Hobbit house from the Shire. Oh well, how about medieval? Grey, bare stone floors. A rug-like thing with a heroic scene on it hung on the wall. Big wooden table, rustic chairs/benches, huge metal jugs and grails. A whole, fried pig, and also several large roasted chickens on the table. Some medieval music instrument at the corner. A wheelbarrow with fruits and veggies in it. White cotton or rough brown cloth anywhere where fabric is needed. Accessorize with a few rats:)
Today I found what I will call the backyard themed room. Now, you’re thinking, okay so flowers should be fine right? Well let me paint a picture - the flooring is a very lush looking material in a forest green- I can’t tell from the picture if it is astro turf or carpet. The bed is white and looks more like a planter, with an additional “planter box” where the headboard is, with what appears to be fake pink gerberas stuck in moss…..Behind the bed there is a trelis placed ontop of a floral wallpaper, and it appears they have stuck fake flowers in the trelis. There are 4 large boxwoods (I think they are fale) surrounding the bed. At the foot of the bed, there is a green chaise in the same color as the flooring, to continue the laying on the grass theme. The wall sconces are outdoor lights, there are plant stands, and what appears to be a wood slat bathmat on either side of the bed… perhaps to serve as a deck?? Oh and last but not least…There is a stone tarantula sculpture that is also a candlestick holder. I’m going to have to say that in general, I am against themed rooms
Ooh, this was a fun burning question. We love that you guys put on your thinking caps to come up with the most outlandish and insane rooms we’ve ever heard. We wanted to crown a winner but they’re all too good. And don’t worry, we’re in complete agreement that theme rooms are NOT a good idea. EVER. Thanks so much for playing along!

On the tamer end of things I would go with a moroccan theme with curtains and rich colors and hidden nooks and crannies. If I were to go all out I’d recreate Disney World with a mini Cinderella’s castle with a sitting area at the top, a hanging Peter Pan ship housing the bed, and some some sort of Pirates of the Caribbean stream flowing around the room…on second thought I might just go 100% Pirates of the Caribbean with part of a ship one could climb up into to find a Captain’s Quarters type space for the bed (working portholes and such) with a ladder leading up to a crows nest hang out space built as high up as possible, rigging hanging from the ceiling for swinging around the room, murals painted on the walls to look like the ship has been docked near some tropical island for the night, a dresser decorated to look like a treasure chest, a hammock hung from potted palm trees in one corner and a mini sand beach in another…how fun
