TYH FAQs
We’ve asked you guys a bunch of burning questions, and it appears as if you have a few of your own. Which is why we created an FAQ page, chock full of the what, the how and the why of This Young House. Is this blog our full time gig? How do we create those custom mood boards? Where did we get that brown and white blanket in our guest bedroom? Get the scoop by checking out our new FAQ tab under the header.

I’ve been so inspired by your site that i’ve send you a million pictures of my home… I have no idea why! I’ve never written a fan comment before either… dear me.
Hey guys, brilliant idea to put together a FAQ tab!! I had to smile when I saw that a couple of my past questions made the list. :-)) Even though my decor style is more new traditional/transitional with some unexpected elements, I like “clean” and I like some “current” thrown in there for good measure which makes your blog definitely inspiring and an absolute must read for me. I always look forward to your posts.
Now if you could make a “Where we got it/How much it was” tab for every item/room of your house. I only half kid as I love everything you have and have done! :-) Congrats on the success of your blog. How great that Sherry can do this full time! May you two have continued success as I can’t imagine not reading a new post everyday.
Shucks, you guys. You make us blush! Thanks so much for the kind words. You have no idea how much it means to us. Smooches all around!

Hey Srabee,
Good question! Since we spend anywhere from 30-40 hours per week whipping up custom mood boards (which are tailored to each and every client’s unique challenge), it only makes sense to charge for the service that we’re providing. We’ve yet to encounter an unhappy customer, and we adore that we can help people conquer a room that has stumped them. We also love that we can do it for far less than an interior designer might charge (whose consultations can cost upwards of $1000 not including the commissions they make off each piece of furniture that they recommend).
Sourcing products (we often select three or four versions of everything and visit 8-10 online shops), brainstorming a new color palette and floorplan, creating a mood board in Photoshop, and writing a thorough blog post to explain each and every selection is a long, involved process. But we love what we do and most of all love sharing our ideas with our clients and all of our other readers.
We know that some people are capable of creating their own mood boards (or might have a friend who can whip one up for them)- and we’re ALL FOR IT! We’re all about DIY solutions, and we totally support everyone who can do it on their own. We’re just here for the people who see value in the service that we offer and would like our help swankifying their space.
Since the blog is my full time job and my husbands pretty demanding part time job (on top of a 40 hour work week) we look at this like a business- because it is a business! We’re more than happy to write over 15 blog posts per week without any form of compensation, but offering paid services it has allowed us to continue to keep doing what we love and sharing our ideas with the world while keeping food on the table- which is also something we’re passionate about:)
Hope that helps to explain why we do what we do!
xoxo,
Sherry
srabee~Note in the FAQ’s that this is now Sherry’s full time job. They are spending hours on these things to help us “design challenged” individuals out. We need to remember that this has become their business. I think it is great they are able to take a small idea (blogging about their kitchen redo) and take it this far.
Think of it as a heating/air conditioning guy telling you how to setup your new heater, a general contractor telling you exactly how to build a house, or an interior decorator creating one of these boards and none of them charging for it. This would never happen.
Sherry & John may have started this for fun, but they have been able to take their dream to the next level and create a fun business that they both love. Keep in mind Sherry has an art degree and they are both exceptional writers. They deserve all they get for their time and patience. I for one couldn’t imagine responding to the tons of emails and questions. And yes, I am a proud customer of my very own custom moodboard. And, I plan on getting some TYH original prints in the future!
Keep it up John & Sherry. May your new business adventure continue to grow! Maybe you could travel the world being interior decorators! I’d pay for that flight!
Signed,
One happy reader/customer/fan
Ditto to what Sara said. I glady, willingly, wholeheartedly shelled out a few bucks for amazing ideas from Sherry & John for my family room (the “wordly makeover” described in the post).
I have decorated other rooms in my house myself, but have redone that room four times. It was totally worth every penny to get a new, fresh and objective look at the space and basically a shopping list to put it all together.
I would gladly do it again for another challenging or uninspired space (which I did a few days ago and can’t wait to see room #2).
Sherry & John, love the blog and love the ideas. Keep up the amazing work!
Sara & Tiffany,
We’re so so thankful for sweet and supportive peeps like you!
